Clutch problems ends qualifying attempts for Carrier Boyz Racing
HEBRON, Ohio (June 12, 2004) -- It's been a frustrating weekend for Cory McClenathan at the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway.
First rain on both Friday and Saturday delayed qualifying. Then the team had trouble getting the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster down the track in the first three qualifying session.
Finally, after Luigi Novelli pushed Cory Mac out of the qualified field of sixteen, the veteran driver had one more chance to make the field. Mechanical problems in the clutch area didn't allow that chance to take place. Making the burn out and realizing the problem, to save any more wear and tear on the car, McClenathan drove the Berryman Products dragster to the far end of the track and did not make a pass.
For McClenathan, who was debuting a new Murf McKinney chassis, it was his first DNQ since the 2001 Dallas race and only his fifth in 248 career races.
"This is a real disappoint," said McClenathan, "especially when you go from a No. 1 qualifying position at the last race to a DNQ at this one. But it's even more of a downer when you don't even have a chance to run."
Added team owner Andy Carrier, "We'll regroup and go to the next race. This in no way changes our plans to run for the 2004 POWERade Top Fuel championship. In answer to some rumors that have surfaced this weekend, my brother Mark and I are in this for the long haul. We'll be here for this year and many years to come. We just took delivery on a new Murf McKinney chassis, have a new truck and trailer on order that we should have by Denver and have both Cory and crew chief Todd Smith signed to long-term contracts. We're here to stay."
The next race for McClenathan and Carrier Boyz Racing is the K&N Filters SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. The event will be contested next weekend June 17-20.
