BERNSTEIN, THREE OTHERS, TAKE NHRA WINS ON GOODYEAR TIRES

HEBRON, Ohio (May 21, 2006) -- Brandon Bernstein led a group of four drivers that raced to victory on Goodyear tires in the Pontiac Performance NHRA Nationals at National Trail Speedway.

Goodyear's four wins led all tire manufacturers and bring the tiremaker's seasonal victory total to 43.

Bernstein won in Top Fuel. The other winners on Goodyear included Tony Pedregon (Funny Car), Jim Yates (Pro Stock) and Rudy Matthews (Super Street).

The event was pestered by rain but the final day was contested under sunny, if cool, conditions. Still, track records fell in all the professional categories. Tony Schumacher set a new elapsed time record in Top Fuel, 4.476 seconds. Robert Hight set an elapsed time record in Funny Car, 4.715 seconds, and Gary Scelzi set a new category speed mark, 329.58 mph. In Pro Stock, Allan Johnson set an elapsed time record, 6.679 seconds and Jason Line set a new speed record, 206.61 mph.

"Tracks come around under cooler conditions," said Bernstein. "The track was well prepared by the NHRA."

Bernstein's win was his second of the season. He beat Cory McClenathan in the final round. Bernstein now sits in third place in the POWERade standings.

Pedregon won his second straight event and his fourth in the last 13 races.

"Winning one race in today's competition is tough," Pedregon said. "We've done it twice in a row."

Pedregon said his team has become comfortable with Goodyear's D2420 rear drive tire, which is the mandated tire for the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories.

"It was making the right adjustments and the timing that work with the way that we apply the clutch," he said.

Matthews won his third event in national competition. The 57-year-old said his trophy would go to his five-year-old granddaughter, Storm Matthews. Rudy Matthews has been racing for 41 years.
