Quickest Reaction Time of the Race Not Enough for Pawuk in First Round

RICHFIELD, OH 6/14/04 When Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk's race day came to a close at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing he wasn't happy about the results, but knew that he'd done his job better than any other Pro Stock driver would that day. In his first round match-up with Summit Racing teammate Greg Anderson, Pawuk notched a stunning .007 Reaction Time, but when his Pontiac Grand Am failed to match his qualifying time of 6.862 seconds, Anderson won with a 6.835/201.70.

"I knew going in that we would have to have a good light to get around Greg," said Pawuk following the event. "We improved our elapsed times in each of the first three qualifying sessions, and even ran pretty decently in the fourth, but as we got better, so did everyone else. Coming out of the bump spot and facing the Number 1 car in the first round is a tough match-up.

"After I left the starting line I knew I'd cut a good light, but I could also tell the car wasn't making a very good run, and by half track I knew we weren't going to hold him off.

"After we lost I spent a lot of time with the fans, and that was a lot of fun, particularly because so many of them kept talking about the holeshot, but obviously, I wish they'd been talking about how we'd won! I also did some color announcing in the second and semifinal rounds, but I would rather be driving than doing that.

"In the last few races we've made a lot of progress, which has been evident by our elapsed times. However, you can still see that we're not quite where we need to be in terms of horsepower, particularly in the back half of the track. We only made two runs over 200 miles an hour, and that's not good enough, so it's obvious that we've got more work to do. We've got some new parts in the pipeline, some of which we'd been hoping would be ready for this weekend, but that didn't happen. We hope to have some of that equipment ready for Englishtown this coming weekend."

In addition to his racing activities Pawuk had a busy week leading up to the event. The Saturday before the race Pawuk appeared at Super Summit XXI and then flew to Charlotte to co-host NHRA2Day with Bill Stephens. In addition to participating in the pre-race press conference Pawuk also participated in the Corporate Challenge on Wednesday, and then joined his fellow Pontiac racers in visiting Columbus Children's Hospital on Thursday.

"Yeah, I admit it," Pawuk said on Monday. "I'm kind of exhausted now, but by tomorrow I'll be chomping at the bit, just waiting for the Englishtown race to start. Every time we go out we go out there trying to win, and if our whole team didn't have that kind of positive attitude we'd never accomplish anything."
