Cruz Pedregon Heads To Atlanta With Confidence
Atlanta, Ga., May 12, 2004 - Former Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon heads south this weekend for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., the seventh race on the NHRA 23-event schedule.
The Advance Auto Parts racing team is looking to build on their strong performance from Bristol where Pedregon qualified a season-high second with his quickest time of the season of 4.815 at 320.66 mph.
"We're really starting to show what this team is capable of doing," said Pedregon. "We had a strong performance in Bristol and we'd like to continue that this weekend in Atlanta. We know we have the power, and the consistency is starting to show, so we're looking forward to seeing what we can do this weekend."
Pedregon won at Atlanta Dragway in 1998 and was runner up in 1995. He ran low ET in 1992, '95 and '98 and had top speed in 1996, '98.
"We've had great success at this facility and I feel we're in a position to have another great outing. We're starting to build some momentum and we're going to work hard to put this car in position to win the race this weekend."
Pedregon currently sits 11th in the NHRA POWERade Funny Car points standings, just three rounds out of the top-10.
Qualifying begins on Friday, May 14, with two rounds scheduled at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Two more qualifying sessions are slated for Saturday May 15, at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, May 16, at 11:00 a.m.
Qualifying coverage of the NHRA Southern Nationals can be seen on ESPN from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, May 15. Final eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, May 16.
