Hillary Will qualifies her KB Racing dragster No. 10
COMMERCE, Ga. (April 28, 2007) -- With a pass of 4.551 seconds at 325.30 mph during Friday night's qualifying session, Hillary Will qualified her KB Racing LLC-owned, Kalitta Motorsports-managed Top Fuel dragster in the No. 10 qualifying spot at the 27th running of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
The second-year professional driver from Ypsilanti, Mich., also recorded elapsed times of 4.628 seconds, 4.783 seconds and 4.581 seconds during the four qualifying sessions.
"I got to pack my chutes four out of four times this weekend, so that meant that we got down the track four times," said Will following the final session. "My team has been working overtime. Yesterday we had to switch motors between qualifying sessions. In fact, since the NFL draft got underway today, it made me think that a race team is very similar to a football team.
"To have a winning football team you have to have good players and work together. My team works just as efficient. When you have to service an engine between rounds it's like one big play. We have good people on our crew that work well together. Each crew member is silently doing his job and each has his job just like a football team making a long gainer on an offensive play.
"They have linemen, a quarterback, running backs and pass catchers. Our crew chief is the coach and our player are the clutch specialist, the supercharger specialist and the top and bottom guys who pull the engine apart and put it back together. Practice makes for a good football team and the more they work and the harder they work the results come in the form of wins. Our practice comes at the track and I think the results will come in the same form -- a win. That's our goal for tomorrow."
Will goes against J.R. Todd in the opening round of eliminations tomorrow. Todd's best of his four qualifying runs was a 4.527-second pass at 318.17 mph in Friday's final session.
Finally, a new sponsor addition to the Kalitta Motorsports Funny Car team of Scott Kalitta is DHL, an express delivery and logistics company whose corporate colors are yellow and red. Will has a humorous story as a sidebar to this release:
"When I roll through the water box to do my burn out Scott Kalitta stands out in front of me to tell me where to do the burnout and he has his big yellow DHL firesuit on now. My crew chief Jim Oberhofer told me just before I started my burnout to drive toward Big Bird. That made me laugh. In fact, I was still laughing at the top end of the track after the run.
"I want to welcome DHL to the Kalitta Motorsports team and also to thank Summit Racing Equipment for being an associate sponsor on my KB Racing dragster and for backing NHRA drag racing through the sponsorship of this race."
