TASCA GRABS WIN IN FIRST ROUND; FALLS TO WILKERSON IN SECOND; Rookie driver only non-Countdown driver to make it past first round
ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 21, 2008) -- Following his win against Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations on Sunday, Bob Tasca III entered the second round as the only non-Countdown driver still competing on the day. After defeating Worsham in the first round, the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang driver knocked the tires off halfway in his second run against Tim Wilkerson.
"Man that felt good," said Tasca as he exited his Shelby Mustang following his win in the first round. "Chris [Cunningham, crew chief] made some different decisions on the car this weekend and man were they the right ones. That hot rod felt good going down the track."
The Motorcraft/Quick Lane driver not only earned a round win on Sunday at Texas Motorplex, the rookie driver also earned the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) $500 to put towards finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.
"We had a group of kids from the Greater Dallas JDRF chapter out this morning, and each weekend that we host a group of JDRF kids, Motorcraft and Quick Lane donate $500 for each round win we earn," said Tasca. "I was excited that the kids were able to be in the stands and see us get the win that puts more money towards finding a cure."
For the second round of the day, the temperate in Ennis, Texas seemed hotter than it had been all weekend, and the rookie driver unfortunately smoked the tires during his second trip to 1,000 feet.
"We had a little bit too much in it that second time down the track," said the Rookie-of-the-Year candidate. "It knocked the tires off at about 500 feet, and I stayed with it. But then it dropped the body right into the ground because it got way up on the tire and that sent the car to the centerline. So the car was trying to go to the centerline and I muscled it back and then had to shut it off at the last minute."
With his win in the first round, now only 12 points separate Tasca from 11-place driver, Del Worsham.
"With us not being in the top 10, we're fighting to get that 11th spot in the points," said Tasca. "I think we can measure some of our performance between now and the end of the year to those drivers in the top 10. We saw some great improvement in our car this weekend and we're ready to head off to Memphis and get this Mustang in the show. "
