McClenathan Takes Quest for Top 10 Finish To Texas Motorplex, One of His Favorite Tracks
When Cory McClenathan mulls over his 16-year NHRA Top Fuel career, he pauses
when the subject is the Texas Motorplex.
"I'm always excited about going to Dallas, and this year is no exception,"
he said. "It seems like I have always done well there. There are a lot of
milestones for me at the Motorplex."
They include three victories and becoming the first Top Fuel driver to
exceed 320 mph (321.77), qualifying first and winning the race in October 1997.
His other wins came in 1996 and 2000 and he was runner-up in 1994 and 2002.
McClenathan and his FRAM Top Fuel team would like to add to those numbers in the O'Reilly Fall Nationals, Friday through Sunday, at the Motorplex in nearby Ennis.
"There are some tracks drivers just seem to do well at and the Motorplex
obviously is one for me, and I don't know why," he continued. "I always look
forward to racing there. I think our team is getting close to that performance
consistency you need to win races. This is only fifth race that we've been
together and Keith Adams, our crew chief, and assistant crew chief Tony
Shortall have been working very well together."
McClenathan has qualified in each of those races and advanced to the
quarterfinals in all but last week's event at Memphis. And he is determined to
maintain his impressive -- and consistent -- top 10 finishes. He has been in the
top 10 in all 15 years he ran the full schedule. But right now he is 11th
with 820 points, 54 (or three round wins) behind No. 10. Since his series
debut in 1991, the only time he did not have a place in the top 10 was 2001 when
he ran only one event.
"I definitely want to get into the top 10," he said. "It has been a very
different year for me and I think it would be quite an accomplishment,
considering all that has happened. I think we have a good opportunity. We have
four races to go and car is running better."
He is the team's third owner in 2007 and was the stabilizing force that kept
everything together during those times of transition.
Races at Richmond, Va. (Oct. 7), Las Vegas (Oct. 28), and Pomona, Calif.
(Nov. 4), are the only ones remaining after the Fall Nationals.
