HERBERT'S SNAP-ON DRAGSTER READY FOR ULTRA-QUICK QUARTER-MILE IN DALLAS
LINCOLNTON, N.C. (Oct. 4, 2005) -- Two weeks ago Ennis, Texas was under threat of Hurricane Rita and the temperatures were soaring into the high 90s. NHRA officials made the decision to cancel the race, postponing the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex until this weekend.
Pro qualifying starts Friday with night sessions at 4:30 and 7 p.m. and weather predictions call for temperatures nearly 20 degrees cooler. Not only has Herbert racked up three final rounds (compared to just one in 2004) and seven more elimination round wins than all of last year combined, but now Herbert gets to go to the all-concrete quarter-mile facility with a bad hot rod and cooler temperatures.
"What a difference a year makes," Herbert said. "I know I've said it a hundred times already, but Wayne (Dupuy, crew chief) has come in here and given new life to this Snap-on Tools race team. He's made the entire team, especially me, all fired up again.
"We've qualified well and we've been a threat to win rounds every weekend. We're working real hard to make it happen, but we're having a lot of fun too. I think we are going to see some amazing performance numbers this weekend and it will make the postponement look like a great idea. I'm sure the fans are going to be real happy they waited for the race."
Herbert has earned eight national event victories in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing competition and is aiming to pick up No. 9 sooner than later. Will Dallas be the site of the ninth victory?
So far, he hasn't exactly had any luck on the season's only all-concrete quarter-mile facility.
"I've never won there and in fact, I've had real bad luck there," Herbert said. "I had a blow over there in 1992 and various other things have happened that makes you shake your head when you think of this track. But Topeka used to be that way and we turned it around too. I had a few incidents in Topeka that made me hate that place. It wasn't anything a race win couldn't cure and it's time to turn our luck around for Dallas.
"We're just jazzed about the performance of the car so we're really looking forward to going and showing everyone what we're capable of doing on Sundays."
Time is the only thing that concerns Herbert these days. With just three events on the schedule, the team is ready for a visit to winner's circle. The last Herbert victory was the fall event at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago in 2004 -- nearly one year ago.
"We're running out of time and we know we have to make things happen," Herbert said. "Every race we are faced with great competition but lately we've stepped up our game so much that we know we're capable of winning. The pressure is on because time is running out on the season."
Qualifying will continue Saturday with sessions at noon and 3 p.m. before final eliminations fire up at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
