Wilson falls in second-career final; second in the last three for the NHRA Pro Stock rookie.
ENNIS, Texas-- Gene Wilson continues to impress during his rookie campaign. The Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T Pro Stock driver made his second final of the season before falling to Jeg Coughlin, Jr., during today's O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.
"I didn't think I turned it red," said a disappointed Wilson, who drove to his second final in the last three NHRA National Events."I wasn't trying anything fancy because I went up there with the same mindset that I've had all day."
A slight red-light start (.383) ended the final early, allowing Coughlin's 6.826-second elapsed time at 202.33 mph to grab the winner. Wilson advanced to the final on reaction time, drilling Kurt Johnson on the tree (.416-.438). Wilson's 6.840-second elapsed time at 202.06 mph outlasted Johnson's 6.822-second pass at 203.11 mph.
"The cloudy conditions really help on reaction times today," Wilson added."I have been running well all weekend. Everyone in the race shop has worked so hard. I really wanted to win this one today. I was good on the tree and we had a good car."
Wilson made his way through the first two rounds with victories over Thomas Lee and Steve Schmidt. In his second-round triumph against Schmidt, Wilson cut a .416, reaction time and had a 6.833-second lap at 202.11 mph. His opponent clocked a 6.844/201.29, combination.
Wilson also lost to Coughlin at Memphis (Tenn.) Motorports Park earlier this season.
