SIX WINS FOR GOODYEAR IN NHRA WEEKEND AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX
ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 28, 2010) -- Goodyear-equipped cars accounted for six victories in the NHRA's O'Reilly Auto Parts Super Start Batteries Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex here. It was the best showing among tiremakers.
Tony Schumacher (in Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), Chase Copeland (Top Alcohol Dragster), Steve Benoit (Top Sportsman) and Bruno Massel (Competition Eliminator) all won their categories on Goodyear rubber in Texas.
As the NHRA Countdown to One continues, the essential qualities that make for championship seasons are beginning to show.
Schumacher, who has won championships in two formats, beat Shawn Langdon in the final round. It was the 66th career victory for Schumacher and his fifth win in 2010. Those five wins would be a great season in other years, but Larry Dixon now leads the standings with 2,422 points and Cory McClenathan is next with 2,353. Schumacher is third with 2,328.
Hagan's victory impacted the Funny Car Countdown because he beat points leader John Force in the final round. The win, in Hagan's first meeting against Force in a final, moved Hagan to second in the standings. The leader is Force, Funny Car's Grand Master, with 2,339. Hagan has 2,314.
Anderson is a three-time Pro Stock champion and his victory over Edwards, the defending champ and current points leader, put Anderson in position to make a run at another title. The Texas final was a great drag race. Anderson's margin of victory was .0148 of a second, or about five feet. The championship could come down to a similar margin. Edwards is the leader with 2,362 points and Anderson is now second, just 16 points back.
Copeland earned his first victory in a national event and he did so in style. Copeland posted the fastest lap of the event in the category in the final round, a zippy 275.84 mph.
Bruno Massel, the defending national champion, took the third win in national competition of his career and won at Texas for the second straight season.
Benoit won his final round with a holeshot victory.
