Goodyear Bullet Points For The NHRA O'Reilly Fall Nationals

1. What is the current status of Goodyear's Nitro tire offering ?

Goodyear, in conjunction with NHRA, has decided to offer an additional rear tire for the Top Fuel class beginning with the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at Ennis, TX. The additional tire will be the D1430, and will be identical to the tire of the same code offered in the early part of the 2002 season. The current tire, the D2300, will continue to be offered to the Top Fuel cars, and is the only tire available to the Funny Car class.

2. What are the results of recent tire tests of the Nitro tires ?

Goodyear conducted Nitro tire tests at Indianapolis on August 24-25 and again at Chicago on September 14. Results of those tests have been encouraging and additional testing is being planned after the Chicago race. Based upon conclusions of this testing, Goodyear will determine any changes to be implemented for the final two races of the NHRA season, Las Vegas and Pomona.

3. What is tire "chunking" and why does it occur ? What is being done to address the situation ?

The situation that has come to be known in the pit area as tire chunking is exactly as the term implies. Pieces of the tread rubber in the shoulder, the thickest part of the tire, become dislodged, or "chunk". When this happens, it indicates this region of the tire is being heavily loaded at some point during the run. Opinions differ as to exactly when the situation is created; within the first part of the run when the tire is under tremendous load and deflection because of the launch and initial acceleration; or the last part of the run, when the tire is at the highest speed and subjected to the greatest downforce from the cars.

Goodyear's engineering staff has been working closely with NHRA and the race teams to find the right combination that provides a solution to the situation. The tire is an integral part of these race cars. It is important to find the optimum combination of tire, chassis, aerodynamics, horsepower, and track preparation that results in safe, consistent, and competitive racing.

4. Why is the D1430 being offered to the Top Fuel cars at this time ?

The offering of the D1430 as an additional tire to the Top Fuel cars is an interim step in the ongoing development process. The D1430 was first offered in early 2002, but replaced in NHRA competition at the request of the teams for additional performance, particularly under hot track conditions. Consensus is that the evolution of the cars since that time will lead to the D1430 being well-matched to the current car set-ups and capabilities.
