Haas Falls Short In Pro Stock Truck Qualifying at NHRA O'Reilly Fallnationals

ENNIS, TX - Sometimes a veteran driver's best effort can fall short in the nip and tuck world of NHRA Pro Stock Truck. Such was the case with veteran chassis builder Jerry Haas at the NHRA O'Reilly Fallnationals hosted by the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX. The multi-time Car Craft Award recipient encountered parts failure on his final qualifying attempt, which spoiled his chances of making the competitive 16-truck field.

While the Fenton, Mo.,-based, driver was understandably disappointed, he fully intends on putting the Texas Harley-Davidson sponsored, Chevrolet S-10 into the field at the next event, which is the season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona, Ca.

"We were gunning for a good run on our last attempt," explained Haas. "The truck was set up with a good combination. I nailed the throttle and the line-loc didn't hold. That was really frustrating because there was enough in there to get in the field. I am disappointed for my sponsors and fans. But, this is a part of racing that we all have to accept at one time or another. We'll be back at Pomona and be ready to win."

Haas produced his best run during Thursday's initial qualifying session when he hammered out a 7.659/177.61. He was unable to improve during the second attempt, carding a 7.706/177.64. He ended the first day of the event as the 13th quickest out of 38 entries in attendance.

Today's final two qualifying attempts were expected to yield much better results than the aforementioned ones. However, a 7.693/176.81 failed to gain him any comfort in a quickly improving field. The session concluded and he was the 14th and in danger of being bumped from the show.

Ask any driver and they will quickly attest that there's no more frustrating of a thing in this sport, than to be sitting in the lanes and watch yourself get bumped from the program. Haas could only look at the scoreboard as his number eventually was shown as the bump spot. The pair before him bumped him out. As the 17th qualifier, Haas knew that he had to lay down an impressive lap to earn a berth in Saturday's first round of eliminations.

It was just not meant to be, as he went into the lights, nailed the throttle and the machine launched before the tree was activated.
