ENNIS, TX (May 26) - Coming off his No. 1 qualifying effort last weekend in New Jersey, Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster ran the quickest time in the opening session before winding up fifth overall when the first day of qualifying concluded at the Fourth Annual Castrol Nationals.

In his first lap of the day Dixon, who currently sits third in the Winston point standings and just 47 points out of the lead, drove down the right lane to record the best time and speed of the session among the 14 car top fuel field with an effort of 4.743 seconds at 312.60 mph. Dixon's second lap improved in both time and speed with a clocking of 4.664 seconds at 314.02 mph. Gary Scelzi claimed the provisional pole with his nighttime lap of 4.57 seconds at 322 mph.

"We saw the quickest times of qualifying set from the top three or four cars in tonight's session and it will be hard in the hot and humid conditions tomorrow to get better times," said Dixon. "You can make a lot of power during the day, but the track does not have the same grip as it does at night. During the night session you can pretty much throw what you want at it. Overall, I think our team might feel our performance was a little sub-par, but I would rather set up the car a little soft than be too aggressive. Last year we spent too much time being aggressive, so I am alright with us qualified in the top five."

Dixon feels that if crew chief Dick LaHaie can get the same consistency out of the Miller Lite Dragster on Saturday, they will have a good opportunity to challenge for the win on Sunday. "We are going to pretty much run the same Saturday as we did today," said Dixon. "If we can run the same set up and run in the 4.60s in the heat tomorrow, then we will have a pretty good setup for race day. If we can keep running in the 4.60s we will be tough to beat on race day."

Dixon's best qualifying effort of his career at Texas Motorplex was his pole-winning run of 4.545 seconds set at the 1999 Castrol Nationals.
