Callaway ends year with semifinal finish
ENNIS, Texas - After several weeks of struggling, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster pilot Lee Callaway finally showed his team's new potential under tuner Ora Vasquez with a semifinal finish during this past weekend's O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex just south of Dallas.
Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, qualified his Finishline Performance backed Blown Alcohol entry 16th in the quickest field in the categories history with a 5.542 second elapsed time at 256.77 mph. In the first round, Callaway upset low qualifier Keith Stark with a 5.571 at 254.59 mph, then used a holeshot to dispose of Alan Bradshaw in the quarterfinals with a 5.610 at 255.89 mph. Callaway once again gained a slight starting line advantage against his semifinal opponent, Brian Hough, but lost in a close contest, 5.582 at 256.04 mph to Hough's 5.455 at 260.56 mph.
"We had a pretty good weekend," said Callaway. "We found a lot of problems we had at the past couple of races. We had some luck, and the car is coming around and starting to run consistent. Everything seemed to work good, and I had some good lights that helped us as well."
With a strong finish to what has been an up and down year for the Callaway team, Callaway feels it will help to give them a run on next season.
"We plan on getting some new parts," stated Callaway. "We're going to finish up on a few other pieces we were lacking. We're going to have Ora [Vasquez] back next year, and we are trying to get everything ready and do some testing before the first of the year, so we can try to pick up the tenth that we are missing."
