CAPPS QUALIFIES SECOND AT 4.910 SECONDS BUT IS UPSET IN FIRST ROUND

It was the best of times and the worst of times.

That, succinctly, wraps up the weekend for Ron Capps and the Copenhagen Racing Camaro team.

The best of times - for this NHRA season - came during qualifying at the Texas Motorplex, where Capps had back-to-back 4.91-second runs to claim the No. 2 position going into Sunday's eliminations. The performance came two weeks after he failed to qualify at Houston.

Capps' 4.910 put him second behind John Force's 4.887, and the 4.914 that came later Saturday gave crew chief Roland Leong hope that his struggle to find a consistent combination was coming to a close. The 4.91s were the quickest times Capps has run in 1999. He added qualifying runs of 5.12 and 5.14 for one of the team's most consistent showings.

The team tested for four days after the Houston event, making 14 runs, eight at Houston, six at the Motorplex.

The worst of times - for the weekend at the track near Dallas - came during eliminations when the car's front end came up against Dale Creasy Jr., forcing Capps to pedal the throttle. Creasy won with a 5.099 at 294.90 mph to Capps' 5.249 at 255.53.

"We were confident going into the round, but the front end came up," Capps said. "When the wheels came down, the engine dropped two cylinders and got out of the groove. When I gave it a quick pedal he drove by me."

Leong and the Cope Racing crew made several chassis changes before leaving the track Sunday night. They won't have to wait long to see if the latest changes worked. The Pennzoil Nationals begins Friday at Virginia Motorsports Park near Richmond, concluding Sunday.

Capps enters the event in 14th place with 145 points, 88 behind 10th place Jerry Toliver.

Qualified: 4.910 seconds, 306.95 mph.

First round: Dale Creasy Jr., 5.099 at 294.40 def. Capps.

Pro winners: Top Fuel, Gary Scelzi; Funny Car, Tony Pedregon; Pro Stock, Warren Johnson.
