Founding father of Pro Stock Truck racing sees dream fade away
Ennis, Texas - - Jerry Haas, from Fenton, Mo., driver of the Jerry Haas Race Cars, Inc. Chevy S-10 Pro Stock Truck, is an acknowledged founding father of Pro Stock Truck racing. Haas helped blueprint the guidelines of the fledgling class, built and drove the Chevy S-10 prototype during the 1997 NHRA exhibition campaign, and was behind the wheel in the first professional competition for trucks in 1998.
As he prepares his Chevy S-10 for the next-to-last event for Pro Stock Trucks, the O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec, Haas had the following thoughts, "I have been very fortunate to have been involved with the Pro Stock Truck class since the beginning. It was exciting back in 1997 to be part of the exhibition tour and then help get the class off and running in 1998. It is still exciting today. I have seen so many drivers come into the truck class. We've had over 30 plus trucks at each and every race That means so much to me, because a large number of these drivers are, or were, NHRA's stars of the future. Racing in Pro Stock Truck has been a dream come true. Now that dream is fading away. I'm so disheartened that things have turned out the way they have, but all we can do is move on."
Haas will still be looking for the final round win light on Sunday at the Texas Motorplex, in Ennis, Texas. He hopes some changes he has made to the set-up of his Chevy S-10 will propel him to the winner's circle.
"We'll begin where we left off. We'll go to Dallas and try to improve on the data we gathered in Chicago. We changed some things around for this race. Hopefully, the new set-up will get us to the winner's circle. We only have two races left and we want to do our ultimate best in both those events," said Haas.
There will be two professional qualifying sessions on Friday for the trucks and another two on Saturday. Friday's sessions for Pro Stocks are at 2:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., while Saturday's times are set for 12 noon and 3:15 p.m. Final eliminations for all professional classes get underway at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
In you can't attend the O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec in person, take advantage of television coverage of both qualifying and eliminations on ESPN and ESPN2. A one hour taped highlight show of qualifying will air at noon on Sunday, October 21 on ESPN2. Also, on Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPN, you can view a two hour show featuring early eliminations. Then, later on Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2, catch a one hour show covering the final rounds of eliminations. All times are EDT and subject to change without prior notice. Be sure to check your local listing.
