Wells nets semifinal finish with debut of tuner Norm Grimes.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Despite not achieving their goal of winning, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver David Wells feels wins are just around the corner after posting a semifinal finish during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park. The weekend marked the first race with five-time World Championship winning tuner Norm Grimes on board, reuniting the tuner with the car he won the championships with.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, qualified his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster eighth in the field with 5.521 second elapsed time at 261.72 mph. In the first round, Wells took out Division 5 rival Alan Bradshaw with a 5.494 at 260.76 mph. Wells then lost to eventual winner Jeff Wilson in the semifinals when his supercharger drive belt came off, killing the motor.

"This weekend was really a transition weekend for us," said Wells. "At our first race, the Gatornationals, we had Santos' old car with our engine combination, and now we have Santos' tuner Norm Grimes on board, so this weekend, we were converting our combination to the combination that had so much success in that car. I think we are very close to achieving that level even though we didn't do it this weekend."

The next event for the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team will be the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas. There the team hopes to continue their improvement.

"We're going to go up there to Vegas and hopefully the car will continue to come around," stated Wells. "Needless to say, we are pretty confident, and we're looking forward to it."
