McClenathan hopes to step it up a notch at Denver
MORRISON, Colo. (July 16, 2003) -- BAM! KICK IT UP A NOTCH! Just like Emeril Lagasse, renowned master chef, owner of some of the most talked-about restaurants and gourmet cooking host of Emeril Live on the Food Network, says, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Darrell Gwynn Racing NY Yankees/Berryman Products dragster, wants to "kick it up a notch" this weekend.
"Last year at Denver we went to the final round but just didn't quite get the job done," said McClenathan, on the eve of the NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals which will be contested July 18-20. "This year we want to 'kick it up a notch' and win this thing."
McClenathan has had a good amount of success at Bandimere Speedway. His first win came on the mountain in Denver when he took the Top Alcohol Dragster crown in his first NHRA national event. In addition to the final round mentioned above, since joining the professional Top Fuel ranks in 1991 the Riverside, Calif. driver has won twice ('97 & '98) and been to the semifinal round three times.
Entering this year's event, McClenathan is fourth in the POWERade Top Fuel point standings with 657 points. He is 63 points behind Darrell Russell in third, 245 behind Doug Kalitta in second and a five-course Emeril Lagasse gourmet meal behind the leader Larry Dixon. That's 452 points, if you're counting.
The Denver event is the first of three consecutive races on three consecutive weekends. In 1997, McClenathan won all three events. McClenathan reflected on why the "Western Swing" is hard on man and machine.
"Parts are the key to the three races coming up," says McClenathan. "If you have a lot of parts or if you're good on parts you can make the swing a little bit easier. But hurt a lot of parts the first or second race and it makes the remaining races all the more tougher.
"From a driver's perspective I kind of like the three races back-to back-to-back. It keeps you in the car three weeks in a row. Keeps you on your toes. Your reflexes are better. Personally, I don't like several weeks off between races. I'm looking forward to getting back to work."
Profession qualifying for the fuel classes is at 4:15 and 7:15 p.m. on Friday and 2:15 and 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. Final eliminations for all classes begins at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. All times are local Denver time (MT) and subject to change without notice.
