DENVER (July 15) -- Mach 1 Top Fuel driver David Baca and the rest of his 8,000-horsepower peers are struggling to survive the hottest day in recorded history at Bandimere Speedway. But when track surface temperatures creep above 140 degrees and the sun baking the fans tops out at 103 degrees, he's got the perfect solution -- drink some of Alex's Lemonade.
In conjunction with major associate sponsor Big O Tires, the Denver-based tire giant that boasts of 540 locations nationwide, Baca is touting Alex's Lemonade Stand all weekend on his dragster. Alex's Lemonade Stands raise money for pediatric cancer research wherever volunteers want to set up a stand. Throughout this past week, Big O Tires has featured Alex's Lemonade Stands in the customer waiting area of each of its stores.
"It's an awesome charity and we always like to do what we can to use our hot rod to raise awareness for various charitable entities," Baca said. "With Big O Tire's incredible tie-in with Alex's Lemonade Stand, it was a natural for us to sing their praises here at Big O's home racetrack. I think it's working. The response from the media and the fans has been tremendous."
In between visiting with representatives from Alex's Lemonade Stand and Big O Tires, Baca has been hard at work qualifying his Mach 1 Air Services dragster for the elimination rounds of the 27th annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals. He successfully earned the No. 9 slot with a run of 4.703 seconds at 308.71 mph, which sets up a first-round race against No. 8 qualifier Rod Fuller. The two men have never raced each other.
"Winning this race will be a matter of attrition," Baca said. "I can't tell you how hard it is sit down with your crew chief and figure out how to make your car slower but that's basically what you have to do when it gets this hot. Denver is very, very hard race and it doesn't help that we haven't been here for the last few years, but we still feel like if we stay within ourselves we can be a factor."
Baca is looking to break into the elite POWERade top 10 at this event. He entered the weekend just four points out of the 10th spot and could rise as high as eighth place with a win.
