MORRISON, Colo. - Former two-time Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells hopes to change his title to the 'defending three-time Division 5 Champion' after this weekend's final Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing event at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver, where Wells has already won once this year.
Wells can control his own fate by keeping last year's Champion, Bruce Bowler, from winning. If Bowler does not win this event, and two out of division races, Wells clinches this year's crown.
"We are just going to put the same set up in it that we had in it when we won earlier in the year," said Wells, of LeMars, Iowa. "Hopefully, the car cooperates this weekend, and we don't have anything like a belt break or parts breakage. We want to get the Championship under our belt, and move on to bigger things."
Racing in Denver's high altitude, requires a totally different set up than normally used. While for some, this may pose a challenge, but not so for Wells and the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team, who have one of the most successful driver/tuners in Bandimere Speedway history, Tom Conway on their side.
Wells has run as quick as 5.70 seconds there in July, only .05 off of the track record. With improved air and track conditions expected this weekend, Wells feels that record breaking performances for this weekend are possible.
"It's going to depend on the weather and the track," stated Wells. "We ran 5.72, 5.72, 5.70 there in July, then the burst panel broke and we lost the race. The car should run middle to low .60's if the weather is right."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
