DENVER (July 14) - As if overcoming the altitude of Bandimere Speedway was not enough of a challenge, Larry Dixon and the Don Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite Dragster also faced near 100- degree heat and went on to qualify No. 3 after the first day of action at the Mopar Mile High Nationals.

Dixon opened the day at the Rocky Mountain quarter mile drag strip with a lap of 4.831 seconds at 298.27 mph, good enough to sit No. 3 on the top fuel ladder after the first qualifying session of the day. With much cooler air in the evening session, crew chief Dick LaHaie tuned the 6,000 horsepower rail to an impressive 4.794-second lap at 304.25 mph, reaching nearly 260 mph at the half track mark. Similar to the opening round, Dixon would find himself in the No. 3 spot at the end of the night session.

The Indianapolis driver's best career effort at Denver was a pair of semifinal finishes, first in 1996 and then again in 1999. His best qualifying position in five years of competition was his No. 3 seeding in 1996.

The final two qualifying sessions of the weekend resume Saturday and are scheduled to be run at Noon and 4 PM MT. Sunday's elimination round begins at 11 AM and will be televised by ESPN 2.
