MORRISON CO - SUMMIT FastNews - While the air was dry, track record performances were frequent and often here at the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. After two brief delays due to rain, Round One of Funny Car qualifying was cut short after just four pairs, Tim Wilkerson in the JCIT Funny Car is currently on top with a 5.189, 257.14 mph effort. Tim is followed by John Force, Mitch McDowell, Greg Daebelliehn, Scotty Cannon, Frank Pedregon and Jim Epler.

NHRA's Graham Light, who is Senior Vice President of Racing Operations made a special announcement regarding tomorrows action. "Given the track has changed drastically since last year, and in fairness to the other racers, we will have a makeup session for the Pro Categories at 7:30 PM tomorrow, giving everyone a chance to get three rounds of qualifying on the new surface." "This is a bit of an unprecedented ruling. It wouldn't happen in Seattle in two weeks if the same thing happened, but I think it's a fair thing to do for the teams." So there will be two rounds of Professional qualifying tomorrow, at noon and 4:00 PM, followed by a special makeup round for Funny Car, and a complete round of qualifying for the Top Fuel drivers. In Pro Stock Warren Johnson reset both ends of the track record, running a 7.342 187.81 mph effort earlier today. "The humidity was too high to dip in the 7,20's, about 97 percent when we ran." commented the Sugar Hill Georgia driver. His son Kurt had problems at the starting line, and did not run today.

In other Pro Stock news Greg Anderson ran well, but was too light at the scales, disqualifying a run that would have placed him third on the provisional ladder. Matt Hines from nearby Trinidad, CO surprised the fans, the other teams and even himself by shattering his old track record by over a tenth and a half in round one qualifying action. His 7.654 elapsed time may be the best run of the event thus far. David Shultz also ran well, recording a 7.705 time with a track speed record of 177.37. A total of six riders bettered Matt's old track record in round one of qualifying. Despite the rain, the cooler temperatures and racing action were enjoyed by the large crowd. Perhaps Salt Lake City's James Powell, attending his very first NHRA national event after winning a contest put on by his employer BRE Properties summed it up best: "I could die Sunday and still be the happiest man in the world!"
