Stoffer heads to Denver hoping to shake black cloud
DENVER (July 21) -- Talismans, voodoo dolls, four-leaf clovers, leprechauns, a rabbits foot, holy water...whatever it takes for Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Karen Stoffer to change her racing luck, the rider of the GEICO Powersports Suzuki is willing to give it a try.
After starting the 2010 season with a national record run at the historic Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., the 15-year veteran has since been slogging through a frustrating year where seemingly everything that can go wrong has surfaced at one point or another. It's enough to make a sane woman go mad.
"We're trying all the magic potions and prayers, whatever we can do," Stoffer said. "Skill and hard work; we've got that in large supply. We're just missing that one piece of luck. No matter what we do it just seems we can't get to the right side of it. We've just been stuck with all the bad stuff so far.
"Everyone says you make your own luck and maybe that's that magic thing. Maybe we need something totally different out of left field to get us back to normal. Maybe we need to shake the whole thing up to turn this thing around."
Bandimere Speedway, site of this weekend's 31st annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, might be the perfect spot for Stoffer to break the curse surrounding her team. After all, it was at this facility in 1996 that Stoffer made her professional debut alongside drag racing legend Angelle Sampey and fellow female competitor Stephanie Reaves.
"I have a lot of fond memories of Bandimere Speedway," Stoffer said. "It's a beautiful place and the Bandimere family always treats the racers like family, which makes it special.
"We're taking a deep breath and re-analyzing everything we're doing. This GEICO Powersports team is ready to fight as hard as we can to stay in the top 10, make the Countdown to 1, and start having fun again."
Prior to the race, Stoffer will visit the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in nearby Colorado Springs for a private tour of the facility, followed by a meet and greet session with the servicemen and women that work at NORAD and Peterson Air Force Base.
