Tuning for Bandimere's 'Bizarro World' conditions might favor Morgan
DENVER (July 19) -- Veteran Pro Stock drag racer Larry Morgan reckons he's attended most of the 31 national events contested at Denver's Bandimere Speedway and he strongly feels his many years of experience racing at altitude will help him when he arrives in town for this weekend's Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.
"It's 'Bizarro World' at Bandimere because everything you normally do to get a racecar down the track gets turned upside down when you're a mile high," Morgan said. "So for us that means the things that have been wrong for us at sea level should be good there, right?"
All kidding aside, things have been picking up considerably for Morgan and his Lucas Oil Ford Mustang over the last several races. Entering the season, he took on the monumental task of resurrecting the entire Ford brand, which hadn't been competitive in the factory hot rod class for more than two decades.J
The renaissance has included both the BOSS motors Morgan uses and the brand new Ford Mustangs he drives, the latest incarnation of which he unveiled two weekends ago at the start of the Western Swing.
"We got this new car and it's working really well," Morgan said. "We've qualified for the first two races since we put it into service and that's a great step in the right direction. Hey, just to be out here and qualify with a new car is good. It's showing us a lot of promise. Once we get this new Mustang dialed in we're going to be real fast.
"Denver is a place where everything is different. We have to change the whole car around to run that track because of the gearing. I actually believe my car should do real well there. We're real happy with it and think we're going to do well."
Morgan won the Denver race 20 years ago in 1990.
"I've always liked Denver," he said. "They rearranged the Western Swing but I'm still looking at Denver like the start of the second half of the season where everything starts going downhill. We're excited about going there.
"We'd like to win the race. We're more than capable."
