STEVENS POSTS FOUR GOOD QUALIFYING RUNS TO LAND IN NO. 5 AT MOPAR MILE-HIGH NATIONALS
MORRISON, Colo. (July 16, 2005) - Richie Stevens Jr. and Bob Glidden, driver and crew chief of the Team Mopar/Valspar HEMI-powered Dodge Stratus Pro Stock, benefited from their three-day test session at Bandimere Speedway two weeks ago to post four stout qualifying runs this weekend for the Mopar Mile-High Nationals, landing in fifth position.
Consistency was the name of the game these past two days, as Stevens first recorded a 7.205/192.58 in the opening session, then a 7.35/193.16 in Friday's evening round. Today, in the heat of the Colorado sun, he set a 7.175/192.63 lap, followed by a 7.177/192.28 in the final run.
There is bad news, however, as Stevens will face his teammate Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the first round of eliminations on Sunday, their third meeting of the season. Stevens' win-loss record over Coughlin is 1-1. Both have now qualified for every event of the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in their first season with Don Schumacher Racing. This is also Stevens' seventh time in 13 events he's qualified in the top half of the field.
"In the first round we were a little light on clutch," he said, "but we made three consistent runs, including the one Friday night and two today. The car is running really good. Unfortunately, we have to race Jeg again first round, but we got both cars in the show again at this Mopar race, and that's been good for the team."
"We tested here a couple of weeks ago and we had a pretty good test. We learned some data on the track at this altitude and we were able to carry it over to this weekend. The Team Mopar/Valspar Dodge has been running awesome and I've been driving good all through qualifying. Hopefully we'll go some rounds tomorrow."
Racing his teammate is not high on his list. "It's getting old," said the New Orleans native. "We're supposed to go rounds together, not beat up on each other. That's the way it falls sometimes. We've just got to do it."
