Recio looking to rebound on "The Mountain"
MORRISON, Colo. - In any environment, research and development of a new product could is usually more of a headache than running the 'normal' or 'status quo' product. Same could be said of NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Sergio Recio. Recio's Cash-n-Go backed team has been working feverishly to develop the Fontana Hemi as a competitive Blown Alcohol Dragster combination. During this weekend's Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver, Recio hopes to put his Fontana powered entry to the front of the pack.
Recio, who runs a chain of check cashing centers in El Paso, Texas, has made steady improvement over the course of the year, thanks in part to the braintrust of Fontana's Rick Paradise and veteran tuner Ora Vasquez. The engine is already a potent combination for teams that run the engine injected on nitro, rather than supercharged on alcohol. While the car has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the year in making it to the semifinals twice, Recio and team have still yet to pick up their first win.
Three weeks ago, the Cash-n-Go team competed in the Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series race at Bandimere. They qualified strongly with a 5.81 second elapsed time that put them third in the program, but an unusual blower explosion before the burnout caused them to lose in round one.
This weekend, Recio hopes to step out of the 'learning curve' and into the winner's circle in Denver.
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters. Stay tuned to the team's new website, SergioRecio.com for daily updates of the team's progress from Denver.
