JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO SECOND-ROUND FINISH AT DENVER

MORRISON, Colo. (July 17, 2005) - Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to a second-round effort Sunday at Bandimere Speedway during the 26th running of the Mile-High Nationals.

The Iowa native used a very slim starting-line advantage over No. 8 qualifier Tony Bartone to score the wire-to-wire win over the New York-based driver. Johnson powered his Monte Carlo to a performance of 5.192 second at 294.37 mph to earn the trip to the second round.

In round two, Johnson used a stout .066 of-a-second reaction time to jump to the early lead before the Skoal Racing flopper dropped a cylinder and slowed to a pass of 5.190 at 293.66. Hight powered to the quickest run of the round, 5.017 at 311.27, to score the narrow victory.

"This is a tough place to make the car run," Johnson said. "We struggled, as did many cars, to get the car to run on all eight cylinders. We made two good passes today, but just on seven cylinders. It was a good, clean race, it's just an extremely tough place to run at. I'm looking forward to getting back to sea level conditions next weekend in Seattle."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 18th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals, July 22-24, at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash. near Seattle. Johnson won the Seattle race in 1993 to earn his first career professional NHRA victory (Top Fuel). The Skoal Racing team will service the Chevy Funny Car and prep for the second race of the Western Swing on Monday at the Denver track before beginning the trip to the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday morning. Funny Car qualifying is scheduled for 4 and 7 p.m. on Friday, July 22.
