Johnson Jr. Grabs No. 6 Qualifying Spot At Denver

MORRISON, Colo. (July 17, 2004) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 6 qualifying position Saturday at Bandimere Speedway. It marks the second consecutive race that Johnson has qualified in the top half of the Funny Car order.

Johnson used a Mike Green-tuned in his blue Skoal Racing Chevy flopper to record a run of 5.043 seconds at 276.07 mph on his opening effort of the weekend. The blue crew followed that up by powering to a run of 4.954 at 308.71 to claim the No. 6 qualifying position in a weekend that was plagued by weather as both of Friday's qualifying session were canceled as a result of rain.

"It wasn't as good as what we wanted, but we'll take it," Johnson said. "It was a good run. It was nice and smooth, but with the new tire we've got here, you can't take a chance of trying to blast one out and risk smoking the tires. We wanted to get solidly in the show. We made two good runs and that gives us something to work with on race day."

Johnson will face No. 11 qualifier Jeff Arend in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday. Johnson has a 1-0 career record against Arend. This will mark the second straight race they have met in the first round of eliminations.
