WJ Rebounds to Qualify Fourteenth in Denver
After a lack of pre-race testing found them struggling to adapt to the new racing surface at Bandimere Speedway on Friday, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts GXP Racing team came back in fine fashion during the second day of qualifying for the Mile-High NHRA Nationals. Putting Saturday's cooler temperatures to good use, they bettered their elapsed time on every attempt, with their 7.058-second, 195.79 mph pass in the fourth and final session capturing the fourteenth starting spot for Sunday's final eliminations. Although disappointed by starting outside the top half, Johnson was quick to acknowledge the progress the team had made during the qualifying procedure.
"If you look at it, our GM Performance Parts GXP was one of the only cars to steadily improve on every run. Of course, we did start off pretty bad, which gave us plenty of room to move up. In all seriousness, however, this engine package is completely unlike anything else we've run up here, but due to the many things that went wrong for us during June and the early part of July, we were simply unable to come up here and test, which put us behind.
"However, we never stopped working at finding a solution, and we kept gaining on it steadily throughout the two days. For tomorrow, we'll take what we've learned on and see if we can keep that forward momentum going."
