MORRISON, Colo. - A relatively inexpensive part, especially when compared to the impact on his season, caused NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells to lose in the first round of this past weekend's Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver. Wells came into the round as the No. 2 qualifier, but lost to Brent DuCray when one of the engines burst panels expired, making the engine lose it's boost, effectively killing the engine.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, came into the event hot off of two wins and qualified his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster second with a 5.703 second elapsed time at 250.37 mph. DuCray was able to defeat him in round one, however, with a career best 5.965 at 233.92 mph to Wells' coasting 8.66 at 103 mph.

"It came off the line really good," said Wells. "Right at the top of low gear, I would say around 9200 rpm, the burst panel just broke. It lost all of it's boost pressure, so it just didn't have any horsepower, and I shut it off and let it coast through."

Even with the tough loss, Wells and his team are holding their head high, and focusing on their remaining events this season.

"Obviously, it was a big disappointment," stated Wells. "You have to put it behind you, and we just have to move on the best we can. We still have enough races left to claim that we can still do what we're trying to do: have a strong national points finish. It's just going to make it tougher, because we lost another race we can claim by losing in Denver. There's nothing we can do about it now."

The next event on the Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team's schedule will be the Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event in Scribner, Nebr., Aug. 10-12.
