Cory Mac looks to rebound at Englishtown

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 16, 2004) -- Cory McClenathan is looking to rebound at this weekend's NHRA K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by Strauss Discount Auto at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.

A freak mechanical malfunction caused McClenathan, the driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster, to miss the field for last weekend's NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.

Prior to Columbus the Carrier Boyz Racing team, led by crew chief Todd Smith, had been on a roll. In mid-May, Cory Mac qualified third and won the Atlanta event, the 28th win of his professional career. Then over Memorial Day weekend, McClenathan grabbed his 28th No. 1 qualifying position at Heartland Park Topeka.

Then came Columbus, a race everyone on the Carrier Boyz Racing team would soon forget.

Even with the slight hiccup, McClenathan remains in the No. 6 spot in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings. He enters Englishtown with 533 points, just one point behind fifth place and 30 points out of fourth.

"Nobody feels worst than I do about what happened in Columbus," said McClenathan. "We were doing so well at the time that any set back effects a whole lot of people. I hate it for Mark and Andy Carrier who have poured their heart and soul into putting together a first class team. I hate it for the sponsors and our fans. I hate it for everybody on this team. The good news, is that we'll be back in Englishtown and are looking to regain the momentum we had prior to last weekend. End of story."

Professional qualifying for the nitro classes opens with two sessions on Friday at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and two final qualifying sessions on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m.. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. The schedule is subject to change. Times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Qualifying highlights of the K&N Filters SuperNationals Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday (June 19) from 6-8 pm. Then, ESPN will air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday (June 20). Television times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and subject to change at anytime.
