CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES MOPAR PARTS NATIONALS WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP RACEWAY ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. SUNDAY, MAY 17, 1998
FIRST ROUND ELIMINATOR NOTES
FUNNY CAR
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, was defeated in the first round by Tony Pedregon (5.124/305.49 to 5.049/302.69).
CAPPS: "The Camaro went out there and dropped a cylinder right at the hit of the throttle on the left bank. It left with the front end in the air. With the cylinder out it moved the Camaro instantly to the left. It's never moved that quick and that hard in that one direction. With the front end in the air I had no steering, and luckily I didn't cross the centerline. I had to get out of the throttle, straighten the front end back out and get back on the throttle and try to run him down. He ran the best time of his weekend. I was trying to chase him down; I was hoping he'd have a problem, but he didn't. That's what makes this sport so tough.
One minute you go out there and you run a 4.86, next time you drop a cylinder. We will fix this Camaro and head to the new track in Chicago." ON THE POINTS CHASE: "It will hurt us in points. But I think the worse we can fall to is fourth in points. But it's a long season, the summer swing of tracks will be very tricky with the hotter weather. Last year that's when we made a lot of progress in the points chase, hopefully we can do it again."
PRO STOCK
KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, No. 1 qualifier and winner of his second Pro Stock Challenge here yesterday, was eliminated in the first round by No. 16 qualifier Darrell Alderman (6.951/198.41 to 7.382/149.25).
KURT: "The Camaro just got out of the groove and started shaking real bad, I actually saw the guardrail a couple of times. I decided to save my race car rather than lose and crash (he backed off). It was just violent. It shot off to the left and I corrected and didn't give it enough wheel to bring it back, it started pushing, fishtailing, it was a mess. It was real hard to lift up on my right foot, that's for sure." WOULD IT HAVE BEEN BETTER IN THE RIGHT LANE? "I don't know. It's hard to make that call. We were having such good success yesterday in the left lane, it was hard for us to change lanes. We could've probably run a 6.90 that run."
