Densham remains positive while looking ahead to St. Louis

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 18, 2005) -- Gary Densham won't be defending his title this weekend at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. After running his best time of the season one week ago in Joliet, Ill., Densham did not qualify for the Supernationals.

"This is real unfortunate because just when we think we've got a handle on some things and are ready to improve and go even quicker, we don't get the job done in four rounds of qualifying," Densham said. "We have made progress in some areas but we just didn't make it happen this time."

Densham's Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo smoked the tires in each round of qualifying for the 36th annual K&N Filters NHRA Supernationals. Last weekend Densham ran a season-best time, going 4.843-second pass at 313.58 seconds in the first round of eliminations.

"We go from our best race of the year to one of our worst," crew chief Greg Amaral said. "It's just heartbreaking. But we don't stay down for long on this team. We'll be ready to go next weekend in St. Louis. We just need to pick it up a little and get back to where we were in Chicago."

Amaral said the first round of qualifying put the team behind from the start.

"We had mechanical issues yesterday," Amaral said. "We dropped a valve in the first round and Gary shut it off. Then we lost a cylinder and kicked out all the rods in the night session so it left us behind the pack.

"Everyone here was running well so we basically had no choice but to step on it and try to make the field. I had a lot of weight on the clutch. I tried to tame it down as much as possible, but it wouldn't have done any good to run a 4.90. We needed a mid-4.80 at least."

Densham will play a major role in tonight's ESPN coverage. ESPN pit reporter Dave Reiff spent the day in the Racebricks pit area, following Densham and reporting on his efforts to qualify.

"We really wanted to make a dramatic comeback in that final round and give Dave Reiff a better story," Densham said. "But we just came up short. Hopefully the fans will still enjoy watching the behind-the-scene view of this Racebricks team. We're going to do our best to give ESPN and the drag racing fans a great story before too long."
