Saturday was the second and final day of qualifying for the professional classes. The annual Holley Dominator Duel is also held in conjunction with the Saturday qualifying sessions.
The Holley Dominator Duel is a race that the Pro Stock competitors look forward to all year. The special all-star event puts eight drivers head-to-head for the prestige of winning and a $50,000 payday for the winner. The eight qualified drivers represent the most consistent qualifiers over a twelve month period that starts annually at the NHRA race held in Englishtown.
Jeg Coughlin has been the defending Champion for the last two years. In the opening round Jeg faced off against fellow Ohio driver Mark Pawuk. The two drivers rolled into the pre stage lights and took their time turning the final stage light on.
The reaction time advantage went to Pawuk by .045 seconds (.426 to .471). The cars raced side-by-side all the way down the track. The win light went to Pawuk by .0326 seconds at the stripe. Jeg ran a quicker 6.912 at 200.00 mph. The run was not an improvement over his previous time.
"We made the second quickest run during the first round of the Holley Dominator Duel. The Jeg's machine responded slower then normal when I launched from the starting line. We have a good idea why and it is something that we can fix easily," said Jeg.
Troy started the third qualifying session sitting in the No. 20 spot. He ran a 6.930 at 200.14 mph. Troy was the thirteenth quickest of the session and remained in the same qualifying position.
"The car felt good going down the track and we made a nice straight run following the groove to the finish line. We got a little too aggressive on the starting line and it hurt us a little during the third session," commented Troy.
In the final session Troy's yellow and black Jeg's Chevrolet Cavalier was the first of the Team Jeg's cars to take on the track. Troy rocketed off of the starting line in the left lane and the car shot down the lane like it was on a string. He ran a 6.915 at 199.94 mph.
"We made the best run during the final session. We didn't break anything in the engine and everything worked the way that it should have. The engine parts that we broke in the first session hurt us and it just took us a little longer to give the Jeg's Chevrolet Cavalier what it wanted," explained Jeg.
Jeg improved over his qualifying time from the third session in worse conditions. The Jeg's machine showed strength during the final session. He ran an impressive 6.908 at 199.52 mph.
"We are moving in the right direction. The Jeg's Chevrolet Cavalier is responding well and we are back on target. The run that we made in the heat shows that we are ready to put this bow tie in the winner's circle," stated Jeg.
Jeg will face off against Greg Anderson in the opening round. These two drivers meet in the first round in Atlanta. They have six times and each driver has three wins.
