ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - - What's red and beautiful? According to Larry Nance, it's his new U. S. Marine Corps Chevy Cavalier

Nance, from Akron, Ohio, former NBA all-star and now owner and driver of Catch 22 Racing, took delivery of a Chevrolet Cavalier last week from the chassis shop of Jerry Bickel. He will debut the new racing vehicle at the NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. Professional qualifying for the event, the eighth of 23 races on the NHRA POWERade® Drag Racing Series, gets underway today.

Earlier this week, following a basketball clinic held in conjunction with marketing partner the U. S. Marine Corps at Marlboro (N.J.) High School, Nance and the Catch 22 Racing Team, headed by crew chief Taylor Lastor, tested the new Cavalier.

"The new car is beautiful and very smooth," said an excited Nance. " The major thing was that Taylor got it going nice and straight. It ran good 60-foot times. I have felt comfortable in the car right from the start. I'm sure we've got little nit picking things to work on this weekend, but give us a few races and I think you'll see good things from this team. After all, we've got the best engine builder in the business, Richard Maskin, and the best chassis builder, Jerry Bickel, as a support team.

Lastor echoed Nance's remarks, "The early numbers are already as good as our Cutlass has been all year. We'll be ready to race at Englishtown."

Laughing, Nance added, "You can finally say the former Cleveland Cavalier is now racing a Cavalier. Once a Cavalier always a Cavalier."

Nance played in the National Basketball Association for 13 years. He was drafted #1 by the Phoenix Suns in 1981 and played for the Suns for six and one-half years. He was then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and played another six and one-half years for the Cavs until knee injuries forced him to retire. Upon retirement, Nance refocused his competitive nature from the basketball hardwood to the quarter-mile asphalt of NHRA drag racing.

Highlights of Nance's NBA career include being named to the NBA all-stars three times (!985, 1989, and 1993), winning the first slam-dunk contest (1984) and holding the record for the most shots blocked by a forward (2,027). He scored 15,687 career points , averaged 17.1 points per game, and pulled down 7, 352 rebounds.

On January 30, 1995, during the Cavs 22nd home game, the Cleveland Cavaliers retired Nance's #22 uniform, which now hangs from the rafters of Gund Arena in Cleveland. The Phoenix Suns were the opponent for that game.
