ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 9, 2000) - For the third time in the last four NHRA national events, Team Mopar Pro Stock driver Darrell Alderman made an appearance in the semifinals. This time, Alderman lost to eventual winner Jeg Coughlin, Jr., during eliminations for the rain-delayed Matco Tools Spring Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park today.
"We seem to like hotter conditions," said Alderman, who qualified 13th. "I cut a good light on Jeg, but he had a little more steam there at the end. I tell you what though; we're going to win one of these things this year."
Alderman ran a strong 6.959-second elapsed time at 197.57 mph, with Coughlin clocking in at 6.947/198.12. Alderman held a .004 starting line advantage (.441-.445).
Alderman's road to the semifinals wasn't easy. The three-time NHRA Winston Pro Stock World Champion defeated Troy Coughlin in the opening round and defending Pro Stock World Champion Warren Johnson in round two.
"We have come a long way in a short period of time with the new Hemi engine," Alderman said. "It's a real testament to this team and Nickens Brothers Racing."
Alderman laid down a 6.962/198.50 combination to T. Coughlin's 6.967/198.67. In round two, Alderman held an impressive starting line advantage (.425-.465) on Johnson and outran him at the top end 6.995/197.54 to 7.012/198.41.
Dean Skuza, driver of the Matco Tools/Mopar Parts Nitro Funny Car, smoked the tires and lost in the first round to Todd Paton. Skuza held a decisive advantage off the line (.508-.607), but Paton pedaled the quarter mile at 5.764/174.93 to Skuza's 8.077/108.22 run.
"We are struggling with the clutch," said a dejected Skuza. "We left pretty good, but it shook the tires and I couldn't recover.
"We came into the event with a strong qualifying position," said Skuza, who qualified third. "We just let it get away."
