Smith qualifies Valspar Refinish Viper #7 at Englishtown
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. -- On Friday, Rickie Smith, from King, N.C., driver of the Valspar Refinish/Bucks County Kawasaki/KPK Motorsports Pro Mod Dodge Viper, began qualifying for the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge at this weekend's NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
Clipping off a run of 6.349 seconds at 220.87 mph in the opening round on Friday, Smith ended the day in the third qualifying position when the second session was cancelled due to rain.
In Saturday's first session, mechanical problems bit Smith near the top end of his run. A blown engine caused the problem and although Smith lowered his elapsed time to 6.305 seconds, he lost three positions and entered the final qualifying session in sixth spot.
With a new engine, Smith's final qualifying pass was 6.313 seconds at 220.30 mph and in the final qualifying grid he placed seventh. Smith's Valspar Refinish/Bucks County Kawasaki/KPK Motorsports Dodge Viper, and the lone nitrous assisted engine in the field, will face Fred Hann, from Elma, N.Y., in the opening round of eliminations of the AMS Staff Leasing Pro Mod Challenge. Hann qualified his Corvette second with a run of 6.167 seconds at 229.70 seconds.
