After posting an impressive opening run in qualifying for the AutoZone Winternationals, Whit Bazemore and the Kendall Motor Oil/Matco Tools Camaro Z28 Racing Team looked to improve on Friday. Unfortunately, his attempt ended almost immediately, as he lost traction almost immediately after launching. Even so, Bazemore's original effort was enough to keep him 5th with two sessions remaining on Saturday.

"Obviously we ran fairly well yesterday, so I'm sure our crew chief, Tim Richards was experimenting a little bit today. It was pretty disappointing to smoke the tires at the hit, because the track conditions at the far end were pretty good based on what some of our competitors did.

"I'm sure tomorrow's focus will be on getting our Kendall Camaro race ready for Sunday while at the same time trying to improve our qualifying position. We'll take this in stride and build from there."

After today's run, Bazemore was then asked if the rules changes had narrowed the "window of opportunity", meaning the fine line between performance and lost traction would be even narrower.

"I think the jury is still out on exactly how the new rules will affect us. To be honest, my first impression was that there would be a bigger window of performance in the racecar, meaning the teams would be closer. In that fashion the driver's ability would come into play more in deciding the outcome of a race. The end result would be more side by side racing, which would be good for the drivers and the fans.

"Ultimately I believe that's what we'll see with the 90% rule, but right now you have some guys who are really on it, and others that have yet to figure it out. Our team has it mostly figured out, but not quite all the way yet. That will come."
