GAINESVILLE, FL. - Bruce Litton had a tough go of things in qualifying at the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals, but that didn't deter the Indianapolis, Ind.-based Top Fuel driver from scoring a position in the 16-car field at the third event on the 23-event NHRA/Winston tour.
Litton, who pilots the Wix Filters presented by the Top Dragster Driving Experience Top Fueler, used a respectable 4.839/305.22 to get into the program. The admittedly "soft" run was enough to commandeer the 14th spot following the third session.
The final session afforded the team no improvement as the engine let go at mid-track and Litton had no choice but to lift. Improvements by other drivers dropped his status to the 16th spot.
The veteran enclosed trailer dealer hates to have qualifying weekends like this one, but he's not going to complain about having a spot in the program.
"This wasn't one of our greatest qualifying efforts," explained Litton. "However, we're happy to be part of final eliminations tomorrow. We have to run the top qualifier in the first round and that will be no easy task. This team does not quit, so we'll come out tomorrow and give it our best."
Litton will face Gary Scelzi in the first round of eliminations.
