CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES MAC TOOLS GATORNATIONALS GAINESVILLE RACEWAY NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 1999
FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28 -- FINAL ELIMINATIONS
RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, was eliminated in the first round by Frank Pedregon, losing a "coasting to the finish line" match. Capps: 11.672/103.02; Pedregon: 10.154/80.64.
CAPPS: "We had a problem with the fuel system. When the Camaro started, it tried to backfire the blower. We didn't know what the problem was in the burnout. The burnout even seemed wierd. We are actually lucky that it didn't knock the blower off on the burnout. I just went up and staged the car. I knew there was a problem, but what could I do? I stepped on the throttle and it knocked the burst panel out of the body and I knew I had a problem. But then I saw him (Pedregon) quit running out there and I hit the fuel shutoffs because when you hit the fuel shutoffs to shut off the engine it raises the rpm, so I thought if I could get the fuel shutoff off it would raise the rpm and the Camaro would idle higher and it would roll the car faster down the track. I had no throttle, I was trying to catch him with the idle of the car. That was to no avail as well. We are getting all our bad luck out of the way right now. We are staying to test here tomorrow."
WHIT BAZEMORE, KENDALL OIL/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, was defeatedby Jerry Toliver in the second round: 5.356/270.05 for Bazemore, 5.026/301.07 for Toliver. Bazemore was twice forced to backpedal, negating a starting-lind advantage and allowing Toliver to edge by for the win. Whit beat Del Worsham in the first round.
BAZEMORE: "Conditions had changed dramatically for today's first round, and on top of that our Kendall Camaro dropped a cylinder about 200 feet out. Even so, it still managed to run a 5.01 and get the round win, which is pretty impressive after having a hole (cylinder) out. Unfortunately, that pass kind of put us behind the 8-ball, because we not only gave up lane choice but lost a little of where we were in the tuneup. In the second round, all we needed was a 5.01 to advance. It left hard and spun the tires, so I pedaled it, andthen it wheelstood, so I had to pedal it again. I believe that if I didn't have to backpedal that second time, we still could have beaten Toliver. But it had the nose pretty high in the air and was crossing the lane, so I had no choice. To make things worse, all that backpedaling caused us to have an engine problem.
"It's just one of those things. You're supposed to be able to know how to lose, since you lose more than you win, but it's hard for me to accept that knowing how good this Etchells Racing team is. We'll put today behind us, and focus our attention squarely on putting it all together in Houston."
