CAMARENA AIMING FOR "QUALITY" 2005 SEASON
Gainesville, Fla. (March 16, 2005) -- Freddie Camarena is shooting for a season of "quality" over "quantity" as he prepares to embark upon the 2005 Pro Stock Motorcycle campaign in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
As he heads towards Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway for the class' season-opening Mac Tools NHRA Gatornationals, set for March 18-20, Camarena explained his plans for this year.
"In order to concentrate on better performance with our limited budget, I am planning on competing in only eight or so of the 15 races on the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule this year," said the Placentia, Calif., rider. "I would rather go to fewer races and be better prepared than try to run them all without a shot at doing well.
"This class has become so competitive over the past few years that you really need to be at your peak just to qualify for the elimination rounds so I am concentrating on running a 'quality' schedule this year. Of course, should we be able to sign a primary sponsor we could quickly gear up to run the full schedule and are still working towards that goal," added Camarena.
Camarena will again race his 2002 Suzuki TL 1000, this year with a new paint scheme and sporting major associate sponsorship from Embee Performance as well as assistance from Premier Mop & Broom, and LaundryParts.com. The engine comes from Vance & Hines and he will again have Kevin Fryar as his crew chief during his limited schedule.
"We thought that we should have a fresh new look on the bike to coincide with our new game plan for the season," Camarena said of his new paint scheme.
The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will have four qualifying sessions this week, with the schedule set for the class to take to the track on Friday and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. EST. The 16 fastest qualifiers will race in Sunday's elimination rounds which commence at 11 a.m. EST.
According to NHRA.com, Camarena's career-best elapsed time is 7.189-seconds over the quarter-mile, with a best speed of 189.71 mph.
