GAINESVILLE, Fla.-Mike Castellana will no doubt be huddling with Shannon Jenkins as he tries to get the setup straightened out on his '57 Western Beef Chevy for the upcoming 2001 IHRA season. Last season, the two drivers announced they were forming a team to under run the Team Castellana banner. The partnership appeared to be beneficial for both. The two, especially Castellana, seemed to have their act together during Houston Raceway Park testing. Jenkins would run a personal best elapsed time of 6.294 seconds. Castellana would follow with a 6.282 pass. Something went wrong for the supermarket chain owner from Westbury, N.Y., this weekend at the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals. He had hoped to get a handle on his Pro Modified entry. Among the four chances to earn a spot in the finals, Castellana came away with one strong run. This came during yesterday's first qualifying pass when he covered the Gainesville Raceway quarter-mile in an elapsed time of 6.378 seconds at 219.90 mph. The run also vaulted Castellana from 15th to 11th and put him into position to qualify among the top eight for today's head-to-head eliminations. During last night's last chance pass, he reverted to Friday's disastrous runs. To make the situation worse, Castellana had to wait out a rain delay. The '57 Chevy shook immediately, and Castellana quickly gave up. He recorded a run of 12.107/84.20. The one bright spot was that Jenkins did grab one of the spots in the final eliminations as the sixth quickest. Now Castellana undoubtedly will be putting in some extra testing time with stalwart and teammate Jenkins to work the bugs out in time for the IHRA season-opening Holley Spring Nationals from March 30-April 1 in Rockingham, N.C. -HC
