LUCAS HAS POWERADE POINTS CHASE ON HIS MIND
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 13) - After the first two NHRA National events, 22-year old, Morgan Lucas may be in the sixth position of the POWERade standings, but he is only 60 points away from the championship lead, which is equivalent to only three rounds of competition.
Therefore, Lucas cannot help but think that with a little luck, he could easily have been at the top of the prestigious roster as the series proceeds forward into the 37th annual ACDelco Gatornationals on March 17-19. He is taking his role as driver seriously and realizes he must take advantage of every round of competition.
"Nowadays, the competition is just so tight, there's no room left for any mistakes," said Lucas. "You're seeing more runs in the lower 4.50s in competition, so you can't take an inch for granted. There a bunch of teams near the top right now and everyone is feeling pretty strong right. Our intentions are to make rounds and let the points fall where they may."
With a semi-final (Pomona1) and quarterfinal finish Phoenix) so far in 2006, the driver of the Lucas Oil dragster is leaning heavily on the experience of his co crew chiefs, John Stewart and Ronnie Thompson to bring him up to par. This pair of mechanical minds has numerous race wins between them, but their main goal at present is to help Lucas attain his first victory in the elite Top Fuel division. To date, he has five runner-up appearances in 33 races in his young career.
"Being only 60 points out of the lead, we're more determined than ever to perform well," Lucas said. "We know we have a quick race car and our team is bonding together more with every race. The Gatornationals is one of our biggest races on the tour and I'm really excited about visiting with the children at the Shands Hospital on Thursday. The entire community supports the Gatornationals much as they do the University of Florida Gators. The track is always in great shape and with the temperatures running in the 70s there should be some great action on the track."
The start of the 37th annual ACDelco Gatornationals begins on Friday, March 17 with qualifying starting at 12:30 p.m. (EST) and 3:30 p.m. Saturday's time trials start at 12:30 p.m. for the nitro classes followed by a second session at 3:30 p.m. The race starts promptly at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 19.
