MADISON, Ill. - Ed Hoover slew giants right and left during the Sears Craftsman Nationals in Madison, Ill., and in the end his success landed him in the final round. Hoover, 40, of Columbia, S.C., had hoped to make it a second consecutive Pro Modified exhibition victory, but wisely lifted when the Paul Trussell Corvette drifted out of the groove against Dan Rowe in the final.
"We gave it our best shot," explained Hoover. "I knew that he was making some incredible runs and that it was going to take a perfect run to win this. The car drifted out of the groove and I knew it was pretty much over at that point. I am just happy we did well here. I was proud to be a part of the show."
Hoover entered final eliminations as the 7th qualifier with a 6.315, 221.89.
Hoover got off to a good start as he knocked off one of the top qualifying supercharged entries, the C-5 driven by Ron Kammes. The "Hoov" won the battle on the starting line and never looked back as he skated around for a 6.438, 219.51. Kammes danced around, but could never make up the deficit as he lost with a 6.467, 221.05.
In the semis, he continued to serve as the supercharger slayer as he used a quicker reaction time to send Patterson to the showers. "Fast Eddie" continued his bullying of the blower cars with a 6.358, 220.87 to 6.327, 224.85 victory.
Rowe was slightly quicker off of the starting line in the final and Hoover gave it a valiant effort, but just past the 60-foot mark the car drifted. Knowing he needed a perfect run to win, Hoover lifted and settled for runner-up.
