PRO STOCK TRUCK - FINAL NOTE
TIM FREEMAN, KESSINGER MOTORSPORTS CHEVY S-10, in his first Pro Stock Truck race, defeated local favorite JERRY HAAS, CHEVY TRUCKS CHEVY S-10, on a holeshot advantage in the final of today's Pro Stock Truck event. This marks the fourth win in five races for the Chevy S-10 (7.877/171.59 for Freeman, 7.810/173.07 for Haas). It came down to reaction times, as Jerry's .520 was no match for Freeman's .441. The margin of victory was .012 of a second. This was Haas' first final round of the season.
Tim, 32, is from Roan Mountain, Tenn., and is currently crew chief for Tim Kessinger. He has also been employed as crew member for Pro Stock driver Ron Krisher. He's a veteran NHRA Comp Eliminator competitor, involved in drag racing for 17 years.
FREEMAN: IT LOOKED EASY? "It wasn't. Boy, having a Bill Jenkins engine and Jerry Haas -- he builds a great truck -- and my crew (it's terrific). It's not a one-man show, a lot of very important people helped us out. With it so hot here I'm tickled that we won. It's my first truck race. I've run divisional races at a national event, but this is my first NHRA national event. I've won a couple of IHRA races." WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS COMING HERE?: "I thought with Jenkins power we could come to the race and run good, we wanted to qualify and make a good showing. A lot of people from GM came up and congratulated me. It felt like going into the final since we were going to the right lane that Jerry would have a performance advantage. I figured if I do my job I'd have a chance of winning, and it worked out for me." WERE YOU THE UNDERDOG? "I felt I was the underdog going in. He had a seven thousandths (of a second) advantage from the run before, so yes." HOW DO YOU LIKE THE CHEVY S-10? "Haas builds a great Chvy S-10 truck, and with Bill Jenkins power, we had the right pieces before we came to the race track. I had helped Brad Jeter a little bit with his Chevy truck, it didn't hurt to learn. You learn in every run on the race track. My Chevy S-10 ran great today." WILL YOU DRIVE THE REST OF THE SEASON? "Jim Kessinger, the team owner, plans to have his son Kyle drive the truck later in the year. There are plans to get a second truck, so I will probably drive the rest of the year. Kyle has to be licensed first. So he'll practice in the truck and get his license and be competitive in NHRA drag racing."
HAAS: ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED? "I was really disappointed. (Losing) right here in my hometown, (in front of) all my fans and friends. We had a fast truck all day. In the first session we were No. 1, then John (Lingenfelter) was No. 1, and in the third session it didn't run real well, and the last session we had the pole, then dropped to second. I thought that was fine. That would keep John Lingenfelter and me apart until the last round. After winning the first round I got really pumped up. My crew worked their tails off today. Every round they had the truck flawless, it was running so good. We had the fastest truck every round. That made me feel good. In the final round I met Tim. We were both going to have a first, a win or a runner-up. I wanted to win bad for everybody, especially since it was here. We didn't take the big W, but it was real close down there. I'm very glad for Chevy. Tim has been tuning Brad Jeter's Chevy S-10. He knows the truck. He's got some real good engines from Jenkins and Tim is a real good driver. That whole combination, I helped put it together for Kessinger. Maybe I shouldn't do that anymore." ON REACTION TIME: "I was a little late. I staged real shallow. The biggest thing was the reaction time and the S-10 was a little light in the clutch. I'm the driver, I take the blame."
