CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES SEARS CRAFTSMAN NATIONALS GATEWAY INTL RACEWAY NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 1998

PRO STOCK TRUCK

JOHN LINGENFELTER, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVY S-10, is No. 1 qualifier after today's two qualifying rounds, 7.844/172.84. No. 2 qualifier is local Fenton, Mo., resident JERRY HAAS, CHEVY TRUCKS CHEVY S-10, 7.868/172.11. Haas is the chassis builder of both trucks, and Lingenfelter is the engine builder (358 cu.in. Chevy V8) for both trucks.

LINGENFELTER: ON TRACK CONDITIONS: "The track is in pretty good condition. Typically when it's this hot (around 100 degrees) we don't really have the traction that we have at the moment. We feel fortunate." ON THE HEAT BEING DIFFICULT ON ENGINES: "The engine actually makes less power when it's this hot. As far as wear (is concerned), it's actually less. It's not really significant, but it makes it harder to tune. We like these conditions. We've raced for a long time and we feel we have a slight advantage with conditions this bad. When conditions are good, everyone runs good and the field closes up." ON BEING NO. 1 ON FIRST DAY: "It doesn't mean much to be first today, especially here where we have a 7 pm. qualifying tomorrow night. Conditions are typically better, it's cooler." HOW DO YOU FEEL BEATING JERRY ON HIS HOME TURF: "Jerry built our Chevy S-10 chassis, and we did a lot of testing last year at this track. We probably have been down this track more than anyone else." WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO KEEP UP THREE-TIME WINNER KOPP: "Beat him, and catch him in an early round. He did a good job, he made the right moves when it counted, Jenkins (Bill "Grumpy) built good power. They have been the quickest truck in each event, not by much, but it intimidated the other racers. There's a lot of experience in that camp, with Stevie Johns as the crew chief and Jenkins."

HAAS: "John got around us that time (Jerry was No. 1 qualifier in today's first session)." ON BEING IN HIS HOMETOWN: "You can't believe the amount of fans you have, and the friends. It's a really good feeling, it's like going to a class reunion. It's a great race track to race on. In the first pass we were No. 1, then John got around us, but we still have the Lingenfelter 1-2 (engines)." DO A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK FOR TICKETS?: "We did our best, I beat up everybody I could to get extra tickets. Without these fans we wouldn't be here. It takes dedicated fans to come out here in this heat." ON EMOTIONS: "Every time we go up there I feel more calm and people come by and say hi. We'll come back tomorrow night, that's going to be the session. We will try to sneak back on the pole in tomorrow's first session. If not, we will take No. 2, and that will take both of us to the final round and we will see who is No. 1."

LARRY KOPP, WINNER OF THE LAST THREE PRO STOCK TRUCK RACES, ACCURATE BINDING/G-FORCE TRANSMISSIONS CHEVY S-10, is No. 8 qualifier, 7.926/172.14.

KOPP: "We're having problems getting down the track. We ran through the clutch that run. The track is really hot, and that's making it hard to get down. Everyone is having that problem, but some are luckier than we are. We will get a handle on it. If we pick up a tenth (of a second), we should be No. 1. We ran good speed, enough speed to be fast. As long as we have speed we know we don't have an engine problem. The engine is not a concern right now, it's just getting down the track."
