GOODYEAR-SHOD CARS WIN SEVEN TIMES AT ENGLISHTOWN
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 23, 2008) -- Tony Schumacher crossed a name off a dwindling list of tracks where he has not won in drag racing's premier series when he won the Top Fuel category's final round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Schumacher led a total of seven cars equipped with Goodyear tires that won their category. That total was the best among competing tiremakers. The winners were spread across both POWERade professional and Lucas Oil sportsman series and the results upped Goodyear's seasonal win total to 53.
The other winners racing on Goodyear Eagles included Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), Diana Harker (Top Alcohol Dragster), Al Ackerman (Competition Eliminator), Mark Rizzo (Super Street) and Peter Biondo (Stock Eliminator).
The event marked the competitive debut of Goodyear's D2550 rear drive tire for the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories. Two Top Fuel drivers, Rod Fuller and Antron Brown, qualified and raced on the D2550. Brown had the best lap of Saturday's qualifying sessions and advanced to the second round of eliminations on Sunday. Fuller advanced to the third round of eliminations.
Several other drivers used the D2550 during qualifying on Saturday. Teams had a choice between the D2550 and its predecessor at Englishtown and will have the choice between the two again at the June 26-29 race at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Ohio. The D2550 will be used exclusively at the July 11-13 race at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado and thereafter.
The Englishtown weekend was marred by the fatal injuries suffered by Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta during Saturday's final round of qualifying. Kalitta was a two-time NHRA champion.
"Everyone at Goodyear and its Racing Division send out our thoughts and prayers to Scott's father Connie Kalitta, Scott's wife and children, and the entire Kalitta Motorsports organization," said Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear's sales account manager for drag racing.
Schumacher's victory was the 52nd of his career. He beat Brandon Bernstein in the final round. Schumacher added to his large lead in the championship standings.
Wilkerson beat Mike Neff in a terrific final round race and added to his lead in the standings.
Anderson beat Dave Connolly in a wild final round. Both drivers stumbled after leaving the starting line but Anderson recovered first and won. The victory narrowed Anderson's deficit behind championship leader Kurt Johnson to just 26 points.
Harker's victory was the first of her career in national event competition. The 25-year-old lives in Gainesville, GA.
The 61-year-old Ackerman beat Arnie Martel in an all-Goodyear final round. Ackerman lives in nearby Saddle Brook, N.J.
Biondo, of Maspeth, N.Y., beat a field of 81 cars to collect the 35th national event victory of his career.
