LINE, LUCAS AND HIGHT WIN IN NHRA WINTERNATIONALS
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 27, 2011) -- Jason Line, driver of one of the Ken Black-owned Pontiacs that race in the NHRA's Pro Stock category, also builds engines for the team and he has a theory about what he needs to win races.
He wants power, sheer gut-wrenching, head-snapping brute force to propel his car down the quarter-mile drag strips around the drag racing universe.
But when conditions are dicey, as they were for this weekend's NHRA Kragen O'Reilly Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Line also needs grip, the kind of ground-grabbing traction that launches a car quickly.
Line got his grip and used his power to win the Pro Stock trophy at Pomona.
Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for the Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock categories in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and, under challenging conditions, the Goodyear Eagle tires in those categories helped the drivers break records in all three professional categories.
"It was a good weekend for Goodyear, under difficult conditions," said Bryce Jones, Goodyear's sales account manager for drag racing. "While we had to work through very cold conditions all weekend, tire performance was up to the task. The racing was extremely close all weekend and I'm excited to see what teams emerge this year as the best and the fastest."
Rain, hail and unusually cool weather marked the event, but teams set elapsed time or top speed records in all three professional categories at Pomona. Two Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series sportsman categories also completed their competition Sunday. Of the five drivers taking trophies home Sunday, four raced on Goodyear tires.
"I'd try to rotate the earth," Line admitted when asked about tuning his car for the cool track temperatures. "But our crew, led by Rob Downey, Tommy Utt and Jeff Perley, know more about that stuff than I do and they did a great job. And both the track prep and the tires were great."
Morgan Lucas won in Top Fuel, beating Shawn Langdon in the final round. Robert Hight won in Funny Car, knocking off Matt Hagan in the final.
Line beat teammate Greg Anderson and Greg Stanfield on his way to the final and quipped, "I was a one-man Greg wrecking crew today." It was Line's second victory in the Winternationals.
Lucas won for the first time since 2009.
Hight carried a special good luck piece, a commemorative coin he was given by the Wood Brothers, NASCAR's legendary team which won the Daytona 500 a week earlier. The coin commemorated the Woods Brothers' 60th season of racing. Hight was given the coin in 2010. Both Hight's John Force Racing team and the Wood Brothers are long-time Ford racers.
