POMONA WINS, NHRA CHAMPIONSHIPS FALL TO GOODYEAR-SHOD CARS

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2010) -- Four drivers driving on Goodyear tires raced to victory during the Auto Club of Southern California Finals NHRA drag race at Pomona.

The race was the final event of the 2010 Full Throttle Series schedule and it is not over yet. Several races in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories will be finished Monday. One of the Monday races features an all-Goodyear final round.

The Goodyear-shod winners Sunday were Antron Brown (in Top Fuel), John Force (Funny Car), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Mike Manners (Top Alcohol Dragster). Brown, Force and Gray all won in the Full Throttle series for professional racers. Manners' category is part of the Lucas Oil series for sportsman racers.

In addition, Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Force, Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Brad Burton (Stock Eliminator) clinched NHRA national championships during the weekend.

Brown's win was his first of the season. He said, "It's been a real trying and stressful year." Brown won the same event a year earlier and also won it earlier in his career when he raced Pro Stock Motorcycles. Brown beat Shawn Langdon in the final round.

Force's race win came after he grabbed his 15th Funny Car championship. He beat Jeff Arend in the final round and edged Matt Hagan for the championship.

"The first (championship) is always the most satisfying because you don't know if you're going to get one," Force said.

Force got a chance to win the title when Hagan lost in the first round. Force's victory over Bob Bode in the second round secured the championship.

Gray's victory at Pomona was the first of his Pro Stock career. He beat Jeg Coughlin in the final round.

Manners, who was born in England but has lived in the US for 28 years, won his first national event and did so with his parents looking on. The 55-year old, who now lives in Houston, had previously lost in the final round at Norwalk and the US Nationals, both last season.

Manners has spent most of his racing career on Goodyear tires. He won at Pomona on a set of D1230 rear tires.

"I think they can handle the torque better," Manners said.
