GLENDORA, Calif. - NHRA POWERade Pro Stock points leader Greg Anderson will be the guest of Major League Baseball's Minnesota Twins Aug. 14 during an AL Central matchup with the Cleveland Indians in Minneapolis.
Anderson, a Duluth, Minn. native, will be participating in a pre-game activity with the Twins players and will help with several NHRA giveaways during the game. Anderson, a lifelong fan of the Twins, is back in his home state for the 22nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, Aug. 14-17. The $1.9 million race, which will be televised by ESPN and ESPN2, is the 16th of 23 events in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series for 2003.
"This is a childhood dream," Anderson said. "When I was growing up everyone wanted to play for the Twins, including me. I guess I took the other fork in the road and got involved with drag racing instead. But when I was young, I just wanted to play baseball for the Twins. That was my first goal in life. I think I took the right fork though, I love racing."
Anderson has won six national events in seven final round attempts this season. He has qualified in the No. 1 position eight times and has been at the top of the standings following 10 of the first 15 races.
Still, his son would rather play on a diamond than a drag strip - for now at least.
"My son wants to grow up to play baseball now," Anderson said. "No matter where we are racing, I always check the paper to see how the Twins are doing. I watch them as much as possible. It's great to go back to Minnesota, but knowing we are going to represent the NHRA at the Twins game is even better. This is going to be great."
Prizes that will be given away during the game include Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals tickets, POWERade hats and shirts, die-casts and memorabilia from Dale Creasy Jr.'s Sears Craftsman Funny Car team, Larry Dixon's Miller Lite Top Fuel team, Rhonda Hartman-Smith's FRAM Top Fuel team and Don Schumacher Racing. Two grand prizes will be a complete die-cast set from MAC Tools that include a Top Fuel dragster, a Funny Car, a Pro Stock car, a Pro Stock Bike and a hauler. The grand prize will also include tickets to the NHRA national event at Brainerd International Raceway.
Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., the NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. It presents 23 national events through its NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has 80,000 members nationwide and 140 member tracks. The NHRA-sanctioned sportsman and bracket racing series provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels. The NHRA develops the stars of tomorrow by offering the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Racing Series, NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series, the NHRA Street Legal Program and the NHRA O'Reilly Jr. Drag Racing League for youths ages 8 to 17.
